Deputy Kevin Smetana graduated from Bloomingdale High School in 2004 and from the University of South Florida in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. After working in the news industry, he had the desire to do service-oriented work and was inspired to enter a career in law enforcement by his brother Brian, a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army.
Beginning his career at the Sheriff’s Office on September 12, 2010, Deputy Smetana has been assigned to District II since becoming a deputy in 2011. He graduated from motor school in 2015 and shortly after became a proud full-time motor deputy. This work has given him many opportunities, including escorting the Clemson football team around Tampa leading up to their national championship and meeting President Trump during several campaign escorts. He feels blessed every day to put the uniform on and get paid to ride a motorcycle. Prior to becoming a motor deputy, he was assigned as a field training officer for new deputies. Kevin is currently an instructor for the Sheriff’s Orientation Training (S.O.T.) program. As a S.O.T. instructor, he helps immerse future deputies in the culture, values, and expectations of the Sheriff’s Office.
Not long after becoming a deputy, Kevin met his beautiful wife and best friend, Heather. They have been married for three years and have a three-year-old foster son, who they love like their own. They also have two dogs, two turkeys, and four chickens!
