Tampa Police Department Reserve Officer of the Year
Reserve Officer David
Miller has been a member of the Tampa Police Department Reserve Force
since January of 2008.
Reserve Officer Miller is
a native of Suitland, Maryland and has recently moved to the Tampa Bay
Area. He is the oldest of three brothers and has always longed for a
career in Law Enforcement.
The average Reserve
Officer is required to volunteer 144 hours of non-paid duty per year.
Reserve Officer Miller has far exceeded this by volunteering over 600
hours for the year. He has also volunteered to work the majority of the
City co-sponsored events.
In October of 2008,
Reserve Officer Miller was conducting a traffic stop, when he heard
nearby cries for help. When he rounded the corner near Club Fuel, he
observed a Hispanic male swinging a samurai sword at the victim.
Observing the arrival of the police, the Hispanic male began to run
toward a vehicle in the parking lot, which had been waiting for him.
Reserve Officer Miller engaged in a foot pursuit of the armed individual
managed to remove him from the vehicle and take him into custody. He
then returned to the victim, who sustained severe injuries to his left
arm and rendered aid to the victim until Fire Rescue was able to
arrive.
Reserve Officer Miller
has also earned the respect of many full-time officers and is often
called upon to assist with special assignments.
Congratulations to David
J. Miller for being selected as the
Reserve Officer of the Year.
