Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Detenton Deputy of the
Year - Deputy David Trombley and Deputy Robert Reiniger
In October, Deputies Trombley and
Reiniger were assigned to transport an inmate, who was in a wheelchair,
to a medical appointment. The inmate was calm and polite during the
medical procedure. However, when the deputies attempted to place him
back in the wheelchair, he attempted to run away while still secure in
binder restraints.
Deputy Reiniger chased and tackled him, both falling to the
ground. Deputy Trombley jumped in to assist and a violent
struggle ensued. Although still in restraints, the inmate
attempted to grab Deputy Trombley’s gun from his holster. While
trying to retain his gun, Deputy Trombley was bitten by the inmate on
the forearm, compromising Deputy Trombley’s hold on the weapon long
enough for the inmate to grab the gun.
The inmate then pointed the gun at Deputy Trombley and said, “I got you
now,” and attempted to pull the trigger. Deputy Trombley reacted
instinctively wedging his fingers in the trigger guard to prevent the
gun from firing.
Deputy Reiniger, who was not armed, retrieved the expandable baton from
Deputy Trombley’s belt and delivered several blows to the inmate’s
hands, arms and neck until they were able to subdue him. Once
secured on the ground, Deputy Trombley called for help. Both deputies
were transported to Brandon Hospital for x-rays and treated for
injuries including, multiple abrasions
and a human bite.
Deputy Trombley started his career in law enforcement
with the Florida Department of Corrections in 1998. In
1999, he was hired as a Detention Deputy with the
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. As a Detention Deputy,
he worked in Central Booking for six years. During that time,
he served as a Fire, Safety, and Sanitation Officer as well as a Field
Training Officer. In 2005, Deputy Trombley was selected to the
Transportation Bureau, where he transported countless inmates to and
from court, medical appointments, and other institutions as well as
completed many warrant transports throughout the state.
Deputy Robert Reiniger began his career at the Hillsborough County
Sheriff's Office in 1999 as a Detention Deputy. He is assigned to
Falkenburg Road Jail where he has served as a Field Training Officer,
mentoring many new recruits. Deputy Reiniger is also Law
Enforcement certified, attending the 2004 St. Petersburg College
Crossover Law Enforcement Academy. He has attended numerous
advanced training courses to include Discipline and Confinement, Sex
Crimes Investigation and Emergency Preparedness for Correctional
Officers. Deputy Reiniger is presently assigned to Falkenburg
Road Jail in the position of Special Security Deputy.
