Tampa Police Department Officer of the Year - Master Patrol Officer David Shepler
When
it comes to catching criminals, Master Patrol Officer David Shepler has
the ability to track them down. On one occasion, when MPO Shepler
heard over the radio that a man was attempting to kidnap a disabled
woman he quickly sprung into action. His immediate response to
the call and sharp observational skills kept a dangerous felon from
fleeing the scene.
The victim, who was legally blind, deaf and mute, was waiting at a bus
stop to catch a ride to work. The suspect parked next to her and
forced her inside his vehicle. In fear for her life, the victim
desperately searched for the car’s door handle to escape this
life-threatening situation. Once she managed to escape from her
attacker, she ran to a nearby service station to seek help.
Unable to speak, she mouthed the words “call police” to the store
clerk. The clerk dialed 911. MPO Shepler quickly responded
to the area and searched for the suspect. He observed a vehicle
near the service station that matched the description the clerk
provided to police. Once he made contact with the driver, he knew
he located the dangerous suspect and took him into custody.
MPO David Shepler maybe a 22-year veteran with the department, but he
still has the drive and determination of a rookie when it comes to
taking criminals off the street. This is one example of his hard
work and dedication to the Tampa Police Department and his dedication
to the citizens of Tampa.
After observing over 20 years of dedication and the positive
impact MPO Shepler has had in the community, his son,
David Shepler, Jr. also pursued a career as a
Tampa Police officer.
