Tampa Fire Rescue Firefighter of the Year - Chief Jim Gary

Chief Jim Gary has been with Tampa Fire Rescue for over 29 years.  According to his peers, he has always been an instructor, teacher and leader.

According to one of his previous supervisors, Chief Gary has never chosen the easy road.  For nearly 15 years he was a decorated Captain at one of Tampa’s busiest stations.  He also served on the Tactical Medical Response team; he was a member of the department’s extrication team and was a judge at an international extrication competition.

Over the years he has taught a variety of fire science and emergency medical classes.  He has elevated the fire service profession by promoting formal education.  He has helped many firefighters and paramedics obtain their degrees and certifications with added encouragement to continue their education.

Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward said, “Chief Gary has been an unparalleled asset to Tampa Fire Rescue and the fire service in general.  He has earned the respect of his subordinates, his peers and his supervisors.”

Fire Officers noted that Chief Jim Gary is a “firefighter’s firefighter”. They say he leads by example and strives to help others be the most that they can be.
